This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of the most influential machines in compact construction equipment history. When Takeuchi introduced the TL10 — the world’s first compact track loader — in 1986, it wasn’t just another new machine. It was a whole new way for contractors to work.
The inspiration for the TL10 came from a visit to the United States. While observing equipment on a jobsite, our founder, Akio Takeuchi, noticed a wheeled skid steer stuck in muddy conditions, unable to continue working. He knew there had to be a better solution. By combining the flotation and traction of a tracked undercarriage with the versatility of a compact loader, Takeuchi created a machine that could keep working in environments where wheeled equipment struggled.
The original TL10 helped redefine what contractors could expect from compact equipment. Its dedicated rubber track undercarriage provided improved traction, reduced ground disturbance and better performance on soft or uneven terrain, opening new possibilities for residential construction, landscaping, agriculture, utility work and countless other applications. The TL10 became the foundation for the compact track loader category that contractors continue to rely on every day.
The story of the TL10 also reflects a philosophy that has guided Takeuchi since our earliest days. Rather than developing technology for its own sake, Mr. Takeuchi has always focused on solving real-world challenges by listening to customers and understanding the problems they face on the jobsite. That customer-first mindset has driven Takeuchi innovation for more than six decades, beginning with the world’s first compact excavator in 1968 and continuing through today’s lineup of compact construction equipment.
Forty years later, compact track loaders have become an essential part of jobsites around the world, helping contractors work more productively in difficult conditions. While Takeuchi machines have continued to evolve with advances in performance, comfort and technology, Mr. Takeuchi’s original vision remains unchanged: to help customers accomplish more.
The original TL10 was more than a groundbreaking machine—it reflected a philosophy that continues to guide Takeuchi today. By listening to customers, solving real-world challenges and continually pushing the boundaries of compact equipment, Takeuchi has built a legacy of innovation that spans more than six decades.
